War of 1812 - This piece is made of a jet black granite rectangular stone allowing us to display in artistic etching a general historical representation of the era and show the 20 names of the people of this area who participated at this time of our history. Cost $4,100.
Civil - Utilizing the colors of this era, the China Gray and Blue Silk panels will remind us of both sides of the conflict being it was the war of "brother against brother". It was the war that took a lot of people from this county to defend the idea of a "United" States of America. Using some of the shapes of the center piece is to help us identify with the contemporary culture of the day. The size of this piece 51'x8' is the largest monument and is necessary to give recognition to all who served during this period. We were astonished to discover that over 2065 men and women served in this war. The cost of this memorial is $49,000.
Mexican - This era of our history did not require as many of the citizens of Richland County but still some went to serve. The shape and colors (Imperial Pink and India Mahogany) of this stone and the clay roof tiles give us a reminder of where this took place, the southwestern part of this country. 19 names have been submitted. Cost $4,600.
Spanish American - Often this period is remembered by the event of San Juan Hill. There was more to this conflict but to best evoke the memory of this time we are using a boulder shaped, India Mahogany granite piece to represent the San Juan Hill battle. As of now we have 22 names. Cost $6,000.
Global War on Terrorism Era
WWI - A change of tactics and technology in warfare and an attempt to have this war end all wars is what is being acknowledged in this piece. Trench fighting and other technology is being depicted on this memorial by its colors (Imperial Pink, India Mahogany, and China Gray) and art work. You will see barbed wire among other things in an attempt to remember what men had to endure at this time, with this monument, will always before us. The size of this piece, 32'x6.5' is required to show the 904 people from this area, who were involved in this time of history. Cost $27,000.
WWII - A large part of this war was fought in Europe and the Pacific. We are using the Tropical Green, China Black, and China Gray granite to depict the two dimensions of this period of history. 2551 people of Richland County were involved in this war so two large pieces 35.5'x3'-6' are required to give recognition to them. The attachment of a bunker with granite crosses will help us to remember the cost of life and the sacrifice of many who gave themselves to stop aggression of oppressive forces in the world. This is by far our most expensive piece. Cost $89,000.
Korean War - This is called the forgotten war, but let us not forget. Many men died, many were wounded, many endured great physical and mental suffering to stand up to Communist aggression. There were 635 people from Richland County who served. We remember them in this monument depicting the line between north and south Korea, The colors (China gray cut to receive India Red) speaks of good and evil. The art tells us of some of what happened at that time. Cost $40,000.
Vietnam War - A period of time when our men went to do their duty and gave as much as at any other time but were not respected. We owe them so much for giving of themselves, to stand up against aggression, to attempt to free others at great cost to themselves. We hope this memorial will pay tribute to the 752 residents of our county who are well deserving of it. Using the Tropical green, Evergreen, and China Black granite will remind us of the jungle conditions and art (including a 48A3 Patton Medium Tank) to show the environment and equipment that was a part of their lives during this conflict. Cost $44,000.
Gulf - Again we come to a period of introduction to new technology and tactic used in warfare. The shape of this Jet Black granite stone is to imply the "stealth" of the event. A new age of equipment was begun at this time. The 113 Richland County Residents who went were highly trained in this new technology. Again, giving of themselves, to prevent aggression and give others the right to be free. Cost $8,200.
Global War on Terrorism - Here, we have the current conflicts that are fresh on all minds. We want to remind ourselves and show appreciation by representing a little of the environment our soldiers are involved with day by day. We hope to depict the close quarters of street by street patrol and the ultimate goal before all that are involved, Freedom from aggressors. Within the walls of buildings of a common city in Iraq or Afghanistan with the hope of the light of freedom for oppressed peoples keep our 144, and counting, military personnel devoted and involved. $38,000.
Peace Memorial - For the 303 who served and should be remembered but were not involved directly with any specific war era. Cost $7,500.
All National Guard who have a Statement of Service from the Wisconsin State Adjutant's Office and have served honorably, as well as all Reservists who have a Report of Separation and served honorably will have their area, in the memorial, where they will be honored, as well.
Each war has its own individual monument which displays the names of Veterans who were in the service at that particular time. Go ahead and take a walk through history, much like what you will be doing when you actually walk through the Memorial site. Even though construction has started, more money is needed to help complete the site. Granite needs to be purchased, the, over 7000, names need to be engraved, and the finishing touches need to be made, including finishing off the floor. Your donation will be very much appreciated. (The amount of names shown with each memorial is "to date".)
